On a beautiful afternoon in May, some of the Give Back Girls got together at Stappa Vineyard. The sun was shining brightly, which had an amazing way of increasing the size of our smiles! We met to catch up with each other and of course, to give back!
We enjoyed wine, delicious food and great conversation. We also had fun wandering around the vineyard and taking fun pictures. Our favorite pose was when Angie suggested we make a circle and form hearts with our hands.

This led to our project for the day, which was to honor our veterans for Memorial Day. I had come across some beautiful patriotic cards and brought them along so we could each write a special note of appreciation. Some of us shared stories about our dads who had served, and Arlene proudly wrote about her son, who is currently serving in the U.S. Navy. We wanted each card to feel meaningful, so we decorated the envelopes with red, white and blue stickers and thoughtful touches to make them extra special.
Inspired by our gathering, I took the project into my Kindergarten classroom. I led a special lesson on the meaning of Memorial Day and the importance of remembering and thanking our veterans. The class was so excited to create their own cards!
I bundled all the cards together with a ribbon and brought them to the West Haven VA Medical Center. A kind woman greeted me at the door and was touched by the thoughtful cards. She told me she would hand them out later that afternoon during a bingo event for the veterans. Hopefully these cards increased the size of veterans smiles that day. It was a simple act, but full of heart! That's what the Give Back Girls are all about!
